What is Gynecology?
Gynecology is the medical sciences and procedures that handle the reproductive system of women. The practices of gynecology include the health conditions of the vagina, ovaries, breasts, and uterus. Several gynecologists also serve as obstetricians as they help women during pregnancy follow-up and in the process of birth giving as well.
Although gynecologists focus on the conditions of the reproductive system of women, they are also concerned with the overall health of their patients.
Gynecologists deal with a wide range of issues, including obstetrics, pregnancy and childbirth, menstruation and fertility issues, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), hormone disorders, and several other health problems.
They are also responsible to carry out a number of medical operations when medical treatments do not achieve the improvements required. These operations include dilation and curettage, the removal of the uterus or the ovaries, and the examination of the uterine cavity. They treat all sorts of cancers that might affect the reproductive organs of women.
The History of Gynecology
The very first recognized historical record of knowledge about gynecology practices and conditions date back to the 19th century BC. It was the Kahun or the Priest’s papyrus of gynecological. Consisting of 34 sections, this historical text explained the diagnosis and suggested treatments of many gynecological diseases and conditions including pregnancy, fertility problems, contraception, and many more; each in its own section of the book.
This ancient medical papyrus never resorted to medical surgeries in its treatments. It suggested using several medications that were sometimes applied to the infect parts of the body or swallowed by the patients.
The second significant historical record of gynecological treatments in ancient times was during the 4th and 5th centuries BC. It was called the Hippocratic Corpus and it compromised the treatments of several gynecological conditions. Aristotle, the famous Greek philosopher and scientists, had his own remarkable efforts in the field of gynecology with his general texts addressing body parts.
Many scholars believe that the founder of modern gynecological sciences is Marion Sims, one of the leading physicians in the field of surgeries at the end of the 19th century and he is considered the father of gynecology in modern times.
Despite being criticized for carrying out his surgeries and several treatments on enslaved women with no anesthesia, what Sims reached is quite impressive. He was able to establish the first hospital specialized in the treatment of gynecology in 1885.
The Most Common Gynecology Disease
Any problem or negative conditions that have an impact on the reproductive system of a woman and its organs are considered a gynecology condition. All women would suffer from a type of gynecological problem at least once in their lifetime. Most of them would have a condition that requires some simple treatments to be cured.
However, some women would suffer from much more dangerous conditions that might have an impact on their general health.
We will highlight some of the most common gynecology conditions that a large number of women all over the world might suffer from.
Fibroids are among the most common gynecological conditions all over the world. According to statistics, a percentage that range from 25 to 50% of women suffer from fibroids at least for one time during their lives. Fibroids are benign tumors that appear inside the uterus or around it.
Fibroids sometimes cause no problems or symptoms at all and in these cases, the patients require no treatments or medical interventions. Nevertheless, in the cases of some patients, the conditions rapidly worsen and the benign tumors start growing in size or they are infected with several viruses.
In more complicated fibroids cases, the symptoms would include high temperature of the body, uterine bleeding, pressure in the area of the pelvic, continuous pain, and many cases of miscarriages and infertility. The most annoying problem of fibroids is that, although being treated properly, it might reoccur. This is why regular check-ups and examination represent a necessity for any women suffering from fibroids.
Endometriosis is a kind of tissues that would be found inside the uterus. In other cases, these tissues would grow outside the uterus and start invading other parts of the abdomen and this is named endometriosis.
The most common symptom of Endometriosis is pain associated with sex, urination, and bowel movement. In some cases, pain occurs without any activity in the body and it would be quite irritating for women.
An interesting fact about endometriosis is that in more complicated and advanced stages of this disease, women might suffer from little pain, and vice versa, some small tissues growing inside the uterus or the abdominal part of the body would be the cause of some extremely sever pain. Regular check-ups and medical examinations are recommended in the cases of Endometriosis.
Another common condition of gynecology is the urine incidence. The main cause of this condition is the stronger pressure inside the bladder that is harder than that of urethra, the organ responsible to get the urine outside of the body.
Patients usually suffer from some urine leakages while they carry out some certain body movements including exercising, sports, and running. However, sometimes these leakages occur because of some other much simpler actions like coughing or sneezing. In other cases, the bladder is generally is generally weak, tract infections, some conditions in the pelvic, and neuromuscular problems.
Most of the cases of urinary incontinences are cured by receiving the proper medical treatment. Some cases require a change in the way of living and a transformation in the habits of patients, as they should reduce the consumption of nicotine and caffeine. They would also refrain from certain activities like carrying heavy weights. Medications also largely improve the conditions of urinary incontinence
Abnormal Bleeding from the Uterus
The menstrual cycle usually causes from 3 to 10 days of uterine bleeding. If there is any change in this period of time, if bleeding is severer than normal, or it takes place in abnormal or irregular periods, this means probably a sign from the body that there is a problem. In some cases, a change in the hormones of the body would result in unexpected bleeding from the uterus.
Many factors play a significant role in the determination of the treatments of uterine bleeding include the age, health conditions, birth control usages’ history, and lifestyle conditions. Of course, medical diagnosis and examination are required to understand the reason behind this abnormal bleeding.
If veins located inside the rectum or the anus are exposed to strong pressures, the blood inside them begin resorting to other vessels. This would result in the inflammation of these vessels and some severe pains, itching, and irritations.
The changes in the hormones due to pregnancy might also cause hemorrhoids. Appropriate medications and natural remedies would considerably improve the symptoms of hemorrhoids. However, a famous saying about hemorrhoids, and many other health conditions of course, is prevention would be much better than treatment.
Infections of the Vagina
Several infections that affect the vagina would be the result of the abnormal presence or behavior of the types of bacteria that should be found inside the vagina. When the bacteria start dividing and multiplying in numbers, like the case of yeast infections, the vagina is infected
The symptoms of vaginal infections would include many irritating feelings like pain, itching, burning, and bad smell. If women are exposed to any of these conditions, they should consult their doctors to carry out examinations and recognize the type of infections and treatments required.
